Momentum on the Mat: Livonia Red Finds Its Groove

In the world of KLAA gymnastics, where the margin between a stuck landing and a stumble is razor-thin, Livonia Red is proving that they have the grit to handle the pressure. After a pivotal week of competition, the team has balanced their record to 4-4, fueled by veteran leadership and a breakout performance against cross-town rival Stevenson.

Senior Leadership and Rising Stars

The heartbeat of this year’s squad lies in its depth across Livonia’s schools. Head Coach Olivia Ryktarsyk points to a core group of standouts who have consistently delivered under the lights:

• Kacie Kusnir (Franklin Sr.): A force on the balance beam, Kusnir recently captured the Division 2 beam title at the Jeanne Caruss Invitational with an impressive 9.2.
• Claire Gehrke (Franklin Sr.): A consistent veteran presence who has placed at both major invitationals this season.
• Nevaeh Smith (Churchill Jr.): A key contributor whose performances have helped the team climb the invitational rankings.
• Milania Mainella (Franklin Jr.): A vital part of the team's mid-season surge.

Rising Above the Competition

The KLAA is arguably one of the toughest conferences in the state—home to the reigning state champions, Hartland. Despite the steep competition, Livonia Red has shown they belong in the conversation.

At the Jeanne Caruss Invitational on January 24th, the team secured a solid 8th place finish out of 20 teams. Even more impressive was their team score of 136.1, which at the time was a season high.

"We are really finding our momentum going into Regionals," says Coach Ryktarsyk. "This season has been really fun, and we are certainly going to miss our seniors when they graduate."

The Turning Point: Bars and the "City Battle"

While gymnastics is often an individual pursuit, the most memorable moment of the season for Ryktarsyk was a collective triumph on the Uneven Bars. Despite the event not being their strongest, the team "hit" their routines across the board during a recent dual meet, counting four scores in the 8-point range.

That confidence carried over to Tuesday night's high-stakes meet against Livonia Stevenson. In a tightly contested battle, Livonia Red soared to a new season-high score of 138.35, edging out Stevenson’s 135.525.

Looking Ahead

With the win over Stevenson and a record of 4-4, Livonia Red is hitting its stride at the perfect time. As they eye the upcoming Regional competition, the focus remains on consistency and carrying the energy from their record-breaking night into the post-season. If their recent momentum is any indication, this team isn't done climbing the leaderboard just yet.
