Livonia & Metro Detroit Weekend Guide: Knitting, Hockey, and Broadway Hits to Kick Off 2026

LIVONIA1/2/2026

As the holiday season officially winds down, the first weekend of 2026 brings a diverse mix of cozy local workshops and high-energy entertainment to Livonia and the greater Detroit area. Whether you are looking to pick up a new hobby at Greenmead Historical Park or catch a puck drop at Little Caesars Arena, January 3 and 4 offer plenty of reasons to get out of the house.

Crafting Community at Greenmead

For those looking to start the New Year with a new skill, Livonia’s Greenmead Historical Park is the place to be this Saturday. The park is hosting a series of "Stitch Sessions" at the Alexander Blue House. The day begins with Beginner Knitting at noon, followed by a Beginner Crocheting class in the afternoon (note: this popular session is currently listed as sold out). Later in the evening, residents can join the "New Year, New You" Crafting Workshop from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., focusing on creating organizational systems and jewelry organizers using upcycled materials—a perfect way to get organized for 2026.

Major Sports and Theater Downtown

Sports fans have a major showdown to look forward to on Saturday afternoon. The Detroit Red Wings will face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Little Caesars Arena with an early 12:00 p.m. puck drop. Later that evening, basketball enthusiasts can catch the Motor City Cruise taking on the Westchester Knicks at Wayne State Arena.

In the theater district, the hit Broadway musical comedy Shucked continues its run at the Fisher Theatre. With its blend of country tunes and corn-fed humor, the show has multiple performances scheduled throughout the weekend, including a Saturday matinee and evening show, as well as Sunday performances.

Last Chance for Lights

Families have one final opportunity to enjoy a holiday tradition before it glows out for the season. Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo enters its final weekend, running through Sunday, January 4. The displays will be open on Saturday and Sunday evenings, offering a magical winter stroll through Royal Oak to close out the festive season.
