Detroit Bookfest returns July 19 as the largest festival in its history

Every summer, Detroit's Eastern Market trades produce stalls for book tables. Booksellers haul in crates of first editions, small presses set up alongside literary nonprofits, and thousands of readers wander the sheds hunting for something to read next. That's Detroit Bookfest — and this year, its ninth, organizers say it will be the biggest one yet.

The Detroit Festival of Books runs Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 10 AM to 4 PM at Detroit's historic Eastern Market. Admission is free. This year's edition spans four Eastern Market sheds, an additional parking lot, and the DTE Plaza children's area adjacent to Shed 5 — the largest footprint in the festival's history. More than 300 vendors, including booksellers, authors, publishers, libraries, and literary organizations, are expected to take part, and organizers expect more than 10,000 visitors to attend.

A book drive with a big goal

Alongside the vendor tables, Bookfest runs an ongoing children's book drive with Birdie's Bookmobile, a Detroit nonprofit focused on literacy access. Last year, organizers set a goal of collecting 2,000 new and gently used children's books from attendees — and blew past it, collecting more than 4,700. This year's goal is even bigger: 6,000 donated children's books. Bright yellow donation bins are placed throughout the festival, and every book collected is distributed to Detroit kids through Birdie's Bookmobile.

What's new this year

The 2026 festival debuts an expanded lineup of children's programming, including hands-on art activities from the Detroit Institute of Arts and Arts & Scraps, plus a brand-new children's author stage in the DTE Plaza Kids Zone, where ten Detroit-area authors read from their books throughout the day.

"We're thrilled to return to Eastern Market for what will be the biggest Detroit Bookfest yet," said Ryan M. Place, the festival's founder and chairman, in the festival's announcement. He noted that the event has grown into one of Detroit's signature summer gatherings, reflecting the region's appetite for books, literacy, and the arts.

What you'll find at the sheds

Bookfest organizes its 300-plus vendors into broad categories, and the current listings give a sense of scale: booksellers alone make up well over 150 tables, with dozens more spread across children's books, romance, science fiction, and Detroit-specific history. Beyond books, shoppers will find ephemera dealers (vintage posters, postcards, maps), used-vinyl and media sellers, food trucks, literary nonprofits and libraries, and a stretch of hands-on activities and live performers.

Notable names on this year's vendor list include John K. King Used & Rare Books — the Detroit institution with over a million used and rare titles — alongside NYT-bestselling author-illustrator Jim Benton, comics and games shop Vault of Midnight, and the Detroit Public Library's Mobile Library. Food trucks round things out with everything from Ethiopian food and Detroit-style pizza to bagels, tacos, and coffee.
