Spartans Hit the Ground Running: An August Recap of Livonia Stevenson Athletics

LIVONIA8/30/2025

Boys Soccer Roars to a Perfect Start

Perhaps the most impressive story of the month belongs to the Varsity Boys Soccer team, which completed August with a flawless 4-0 record.[1] The Spartans were a force to be reckoned with, not just winning their games but dominating them, tallying a remarkable 17-0 goal differential. The team's defensive line, anchored by Ian Hetherington and Reece Williams, did not allow a single goal against a series of formidable opponents.[2]

Their commanding victories included a 4-0 win over Ida High School and a series of league wins against Dearborn (3-0), Fordson (2-0), and Franklin (8-0).[1] The team's success is a testament to the returning core of veteran players, including midfielder standouts Will Brukoff, Drew Erickson, and Brody Shingledecker, as well as the potent forward line of Dominic Allevato, Niko Zhuli, and Evan Harris.[2] With this kind of early momentum, the team is well-positioned to make a deep run into the postseason.

Volleyball Builds Momentum Through Grueling Tournaments

The Stevenson Varsity Girls Volleyball team spent August honing its skills through a demanding schedule of games and tournaments, finishing the month with a record of 5-7.[3] Rather than focusing on a win-loss tally, their early season can be seen as a crucial period of growth and development. The team’s schedule was packed with tournament play, including matches against teams like Jenison and Plainwell.[3] The Spartans proved their resilience by ending the month on a high note, with a powerful 3-0 victory against St. Catherine of Siena Academy, which signals a positive turn as they head into league play.[3] The team, led by Head Coach Amy Osborn, is a mix of juniors and seniors, including Avery Cipa, Gracyn Martin, Addison Boven, and Saige Zoro, who are all working to find their competitive rhythm.[3, 4]

Football Aims for a Comeback After Season Opener

The Varsity Football team faced an early test in their season opener, a non-league home game against North Farmington High School on Thursday, August 28.[5, 6] The Spartans were defeated 7-20 in a game that saw some offensive struggles, with the team recording 0 passing yards.[7]

However, the team showed flashes of brilliance. Senior wide receiver and cornerback Luke Beri scored the team's only touchdown and led with 24 receiving yards per game.[7] Meanwhile, senior running back Tasso Kotsogiannis led the ground attack with 14 rushing yards per game.[7] With a roster composed of 24 seniors and just one junior, the team is full of veteran leadership.[5, 8] This wealth of experience provides a strong foundation for the team to make strategic adjustments and build on their strengths as they move deeper into their schedule.

As September begins, the Spartans are ready to build on their August performances. The community is encouraged to show their support at games throughout the season.
