The Weather: A Week of Extremes

If you only remember one thing about this week's forecast, make it Monday.

Sunday opens warm and gray — a high near 89° under overcast skies, with about a one-in-three chance of rain. It's the last comfortable day for a while. Monday brings thunderstorms, potentially with hail, and close to two inches of rain. The high drops to 84°, but humidity pushes the heat index toward 91°. Tuesday isn't much better: more heavy showers, another two-thirds of an inch of rain, and a day that will feel like 95° despite an actual high of 87°.

Wednesday is the turn. Skies clear, the high settles at 84°, and the back half of the week is genuinely pleasant — 81° Thursday with light drizzle, 83° and partly cloudy Friday.

Then Saturday arrives and the bottom falls out. The forecast high is 70°, nearly twenty degrees cooler than Sunday's, with light drizzle and an overnight low of 66°. It's the kind of day that arrives in mid-August and reminds everyone what's coming.

Plan accordingly: front-load your outdoor plans to Sunday, then wait it out until Wednesday.

The News

Federal court orders Leo's Coney Island owner to pay $515,857 to 143 workers

A federal court has ordered Kiriakos Vlahadamis, owner of four Leo's Coney Island restaurants in Southeast Michigan — including the Livonia location — to pay more than half a million dollars in unpaid overtime wages and damages.

The U.S. Department of Labor alleged in a 2024 complaint that the four restaurants, which also include locations in Clarkston, Dearborn and Sterling Heights, paid employees their regular hourly rate for every hour worked, including hours beyond forty in a week. Federal law requires time-and-a-half beyond that threshold.

What makes the case notable is that the owner had already agreed to comply. Vlahadamis and others at the four locations signed a court document in 2018 committing to follow the Fair Labor Standards Act. Prosecutors said the violations continued anyway, repeatedly and knowingly, from 2018 through 2024. Investigators also found the restaurants kept two separate sets of timecards, splitting employees' regular and overtime hours across them.

In June, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan approved a consent judgment requiring payment of $515,857 in overtime wages and damages to the 143 affected employees, plus $73,784 in civil penalties and $10,000 in attorney fees.

A family is still looking for answers after their dog was attacked at home

A Livonia family whose dog was attacked in their own yard is still waiting for answers about what happened. The owners have been seeking information to determine what caused the attack, and local authorities have not yet identified the animal responsible.

Sunday, August 9

The St. Rafka Church Summer Festival reaches its final day, running 1–7 p.m. at the church property on Lyndon Street. Admission and parking are free, and the three-day event has been serving Middle Eastern food alongside live entertainment, carnival games, a hookah lounge and henna tattoos.

Also Sunday: the AHS Class of 1976 gathers at UAW Local 182 to mark fifty years since graduation, and NL Beauty Academy hosts a youth Pilates session on 7 Mile.

Monday, August 10

Two ribbon cuttings land on the same afternoon, both at 3:30 p.m. through the Livonia-Westland Chamber: Charley's Cheesesteaks and the EmUrgent Care Clinic. The Livonia-Westland Networking Professionals meet at 8:15 a.m., and the Finance & Budget Committee convenes at 7 p.m. at 33000 Civic Center Drive.

Tuesday, August 11

The Planning Commission holds a public hearing and regular meeting at 7 p.m. Earlier in the day, the Livonia Public Library hosts Coffee, Cocoa, and Coloring, and Schoolcraft College's Academy Training Center runs Teen Street Skills — a behind-the-wheel program aimed at building habits that last.

The Chamber's Drinks & Dialogues After Hours runs 4–6 p.m. at Wicked Pickle in Westland. It's free for members, sponsored by TRUE Community Credit Union, with a cash bar on site.

Wednesday, August 12

The Nonprofit Networking Group meets at 9:15 a.m. at the Chamber's Livonia office — email Shari Davidek to check availability first. The August Membership Social takes place at Mies Park, and VBS 2026: SUPERHERO kicks off at Good News Detroit Church.

Thursday, August 13

The Traffic Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. at Civic Center Drive. SEMI Connect networking runs at 8:30 a.m., the Local Business Network meetup happens at Leo's Coney Island, and Family Night at Urban Air brings the kids out on Plymouth Road. Wild Bill's Tobacco hosts the Kings of Summer Tour with Crowned Heads Cigars.

Friday, August 14

Eli's LionHeart Foundation holds its third annual charity golf outing on 7 Mile Road. Mochinut cuts its ribbon at 11:30 a.m. on Seven Mile, with the owners on hand to meet neighbors.

Saturday, August 15

The week's most important event is free. The Livonia Human Relations Commission presents "The Conversation: Mental Health & Wellness" from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Civic Center Library on Five Mile Road. The event brings together mental health professionals for panel discussions, presentations, vendor booths and Q&A covering trauma, substance abuse, family and youth mental health, depression, aging and suicide.

Participating organizations include Starfish Family Services, Hegira Health, Cruz Clinic, Recovery Action Network and SPN Survivors. For details, contact rkglover@livonia.gov.

For something lighter that evening, the Livonia Jaycees bring their Star Wars-themed Bar Wars Pub Crawl to Supernatural Brewing and Spirits, and there's a Bachata & Cocktails social on Schoolcraft Road.
