Hercules Pastries: Where Love, Healing, and Gourmet Pet Treats Come Together in Livonia

LIVONIA9/27/2025

In Livonia, Michigan, a small-batch pet treat business is capturing hearts — and wagging tails — with its passion-driven mission, wholesome ingredients, and deeply personal story. Hercules Pastries, founded by Yiwei Hu in 2024, isn’t just another pet bakery. It’s a labor of love born from resilience, healing, and the bond between a woman and her service dog.

A Culinary Calling Meets a Healing Journey

Founder Yiwei Hu grew up surrounded by the sights and smells of professional kitchens. Both of her parents were chefs and restaurateurs in Houston, Texas, where she learned knife skills and customer service at a young age. After earning degrees in biochemistry and psychology and beginning a master’s program in clinical mental health counseling, Hu found herself stuck in an unfulfilling corporate job. The experience pushed her to reconnect with her passions: food, animals, and community.

The catalyst came in 2020, after Hu survived a traumatic school shooting. Diagnosed with chronic PTSD and anxiety, she struggled to feel safe — until Hercules, a German Shepherd service dog, entered her life. Hercules became more than a companion; he was a lifeline, bringing structure, comfort, and joy back into Hu’s daily routine.

“Because of him, I now have routine and consistency,” Hu says. “He’s taught me so much about self-care — from long walks to playing soccer to simply being present. He truly became the light of my life.”

A Brand Inspired by a Best Friend

Hercules didn’t just change Hu’s life — he inspired her business. During their walks around Livonia’s parks and trails, Hu noticed that many commercial pet treats relied on preservatives, artificial colors, and fillers. Hercules, with his sensitive stomach, refused most store-bought snacks. Hu began baking her own treats using whole proteins and simple, real ingredients — and the results were transformative.

“I realized that if Hercules deserved better, so did every other dog and cat,” she says. “That’s how Hercules Pastries was born.”

Why Livonia? Because Community Matters

Hu and her family have deep roots in Livonia, spanning three generations. After moving there in 2021 during the pandemic, she embraced the city’s family-oriented spirit and close-knit support systems. Launching her dream business in Livonia felt natural: it’s where her support network lives, and where she wanted to give back.

Today, Hercules Pastries appears at local farmers’ markets in Livonia, Canton, and beyond, with plans to expand into neighboring communities like Northville and Plymouth. Meeting customers face-to-face at markets gives Hu the chance to share her story and watch pets enthusiastically choose their favorite flavors.

Handmade, Whole-Ingredient Treats — With Purpose

What sets Hercules Pastries apart is the philosophy behind the products. Each treat is:

  • Grain-free, gluten-free, sugar-free, and preservative-free
  • Made with locally sourced, whole ingredients
  • Handcrafted in small batches with care

Recipes are intentionally simple — often just one to four real ingredients — making the treats protein-rich and easier to digest for pets with sensitive stomachs. The range includes jerkies, dental chews, seasonal recipes, and specialty toppers. Fan favorites include Blueberry Peanut Butter Cookies, Minty Chicken Dental Treats, and the Universal Duck Yolk Soft Chews, which also work well as pill covers for medication.

More Than Treats: A Mission for Health and Happiness

Hu treats each market appearance as an opportunity to educate pet owners about nutrition and ingredient quality. Customers often share success stories: improved digestion, firmer stools, fresher breath, and more energy. Rapid demand since the 2024 launch has presented production challenges, and Hu is exploring commercial equipment to meet growing interest — but community support keeps her moving forward.

“I’ve learned that people in Livonia want to support small, local businesses because we’re their neighbors,” Hu says. “They see the care and authenticity behind what we do.”

A New Chapter — Together

Hercules Pastries is more than a business for Hu — it’s proof that purpose and resilience can reshape a life. The venture allowed her to leave a draining corporate job and build something meaningful. Hercules, meanwhile, has found a new role as mascot, taste-tester, and local celebrity at markets and events.

“If he could talk,” Hu said, “I think Hercules would brag about being the face of the company — and probably offer treats to all the girl dogs he wants to date.”
