Livonia City Council Honors State Champions and Moves Forward with Spree '76 Planning

The Livonia City Council met on April 8, 2026, for a session highlighted by the celebration of local athletic achievement and the approval of several major community events and public safety investments.
A Championship Celebration
The meeting began on a high note as the council recognized the Livonia United Girls High School hockey team for their recent state championship victory.
The athletes led the room in the Pledge of Allegiance to open the proceedings. Councilmembers expressed immense pride in the team’s accomplishment, citing their dedication as a testament to the city’s spirit.
Spree ’76 Preparations Underway
Planning for the city’s landmark summer festival, Spree ’76, took center stage during the consent agenda.
The council approved multiple requests from the Livonia Anniversary Committee, Inc., including permits for Wade Shows to operate carnival rides at Ford Field and Veterans’ Park from June 23–28.
The skies will light up on Sunday, June 28, with a sanctioned fireworks display scheduled for 10:15 p.m. at Stymelski Veterans' Park.
To accommodate the festivities, several road closures were authorized, including segments of Stark Road and Lyndon, and a scheduled closure of Farmington Road on the night of the fireworks.
Investment in Public Safety and Health
In a move focused on the long-term health of city employees, the council authorized the purchase of Grail-Galleri cancer screening services.
These professional services will provide early cancer detection for Livonia firefighters using advanced multi-cancer early detection (MCED) technology.
The city’s emergency fleet is also set for an upgrade. The council approved the purchase of one 2027 Life Line Type-1 Superliner ambulance and four 2026 Ford F150 pickup trucks to replace aging frontline vehicles.
Pawn Shop Display Request Denied
Following a discussion regarding local ordinances and sidewalk safety, the council denied a waiver petition from Great Lakes Pawn.
The business had requested permission for the outdoor display of merchandise at its Grand River Avenue location. Concerns were raised during the meeting about items potentially impeding public walkways. The motion to approve the waiver failed in a 6–1 vote.
