The Weather: Wet Today, Cool Tomorrow, Stormy Midweek

Today is the story — and it's a soaker. Roughly 2.6 inches of rain with a 60% chance of heavy showers and winds near 16 mph, under a high of 81°. That's the wettest single day in weeks.

Sunday brings the sharpest temperature swing of the month: a high of just 72°, nine degrees cooler than today and the first genuine hint of fall. Dry, but gray.

Monday and Tuesday are the week's reward — no measurable rain at all, climbing from 79° to 84° under overcast skies. Tuesday morning starts at 56°, so a jacket early.

Then it turns again. Wednesday brings thunderstorms with a 37% chance and a high of 85°. Thursday follows with another 1.2 inches of heavy showers, dropping to 79°.

Friday clears out cleanly at 82°, and Saturday closes at 83° with only light drizzle.

The short version: ride out today, enjoy Monday and Tuesday, and keep Wednesday and Thursday flexible.

The News

Man accused of killing four family members ruled unfit for trial

A judge has found the Livonia man accused of murdering four members of his own family incompetent to stand trial, determining he is currently unable to participate in his own legal defense.

The ruling pauses proceedings in the quadruple homicide case. He will undergo treatment intended to restore competency, and the case can return to court if evaluators determine that has been achieved.

Fingerprints and a Grappler end a string of car break-ins

A weeks-long Livonia police investigation into vehicle break-ins across the city ended with an arrest, and the department released video of how it happened.

Field evidence technicians processed latent fingerprints collected from several break-in scenes and identified Richard Johnson, 32, of Detroit. Investigators linked him to multiple break-ins in Livonia and similar incidents in surrounding communities.

On Friday, Aug. 14, officers located Johnson while he was allegedly attempting to break into more vehicles. He tried to flee in his own car; officers stopped him with a Grappler, a device that entangles a vehicle's rear tire and brings it to a halt. He was taken into custody without incident.

Johnson faces one count of felony larceny from a motor vehicle, one count of felony larceny, six counts of misdemeanor larceny, and habitual offender status. He was arraigned Aug. 17 before Magistrate Roger Spence at the 16th District Court, with bond set at $50,000 cash. A probable cause conference is scheduled for Aug. 27.

Schoolcraft becomes first in Michigan to grant degree credit for trade apprenticeships

Livonia-based Schoolcraft College is the first institution in the state to adopt a new workforce model that converts building trades apprenticeship training into college credit.

The MI-CCAP agreement is a public-private collaboration between the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 2, the Michigan Community College Association, and Michigan's Labor and Economic Development Office. It integrates apprenticeship work into credit toward an associate degree across 24 Michigan community colleges, with apprentices gaining access to tutoring, advising and student wellness services.

"We believe the MI-CCAP agreement is one of the first in the country to facilitate a transfer agreement to union workers," said LEO director Susan Corbin, crediting Schoolcraft President Dr. Glenn Cerny for early adoption.

There's also a dual-enrollment path: high school students can graduate with a diploma, a completed apprenticeship, and college credit at the same time.

"The program is an opportunity for our workers to continue their education without having to start over," said Brett Gierak, president of Bricklayers Local 2. The partnership is funded in part by Congressionally Directed Spending sponsored by U.S. Sen. Gary Peters.

Kirksey Recreation Center closed all week

The Jack Kirksey Recreation Center is closed Monday through Friday, Aug. 24–28, for its Annual Shutdown Week — the yearly window for deep maintenance. Plan workouts, lessons and drop-in programs around it. The building reopens Saturday.

Wednesday, Aug. 19

The crosstown volleyball meeting went to Churchill, who swept Franklin 2–0. Both boys soccer squads won the same night: Franklin edged Allen Park 1–0 at home, and Churchill took a 2–1 road win at Howell.

Stevenson had a mixed multi-team volleyball day at home — a 2–1 win over Detroit Cass Tech and a 1–0 win over Grand Haven, offset by losses to Northville (0–2), Canton (0–1) and Portage Central (2–3). On the pitch, Stevenson fell 5–0 to Detroit Catholic Central, and Clarenceville lost 7–0 to Ferndale.

Thursday, Aug. 20

Churchill posted the week's biggest margin, beating Taylor 8–0 at home. Franklin had the harder night, falling 7–2 to South Lyon.

Friday, Aug. 21

Clarenceville rebounded with a 5–0 shutout of Oak Park at home — a 12-goal swing from their Wednesday result.

The Aramco LIV Golf Michigan Team Championship runs Wednesday through Saturday at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort in Plymouth — about fifteen minutes from Livonia.
